Dir en grey is a Japanese rock band formed in 1997 from the disbanded Visual Kei band La:Sadie's. It has kept a steady member line up consisting of Kyo on vocals, Kaoru and Die both on guitar, Toshiya on bass and Shinya on drums.

There is some confusion over the band name's origin and actual meaning. Kaoru has stated that it means "greyish silver coin," although this is seemingly unfounded. A more accurate translation would be "you in grey." Each word from "Dir en grey" is taken from a different language. "Dir" is the word "you" from German, "en" is "in" from French, And "grey" is the English word. Dir en grey's international fans who speak a Latin-based language often use the abbreviations Deg and Diru when both speaking and typing for sake of brevity.

Band members

The band member's real names have long been disputed both by Japanese and International fans. The names given are the generally accepted names, with the official stage names in the first set of brackets and the katakana version in the second. However, note that these are not necessarily their true names, which are unknown. Their birthdates are also uncertain. Since Shinya, Toshiya and Die write their stage name in Romaji, they are written as such. Before Dir en grey Kaoru wrote his name in Romaji too (La:Sadies).

  • The vocalist is Nishimura (or Niimura) Tooru or Kyo (京/キョウ) （ニシムラ/ニイムラトオル) born February 16, 1976 in Kyoto. Kyo writes the band's lyrics.
  • The guitarist is Kaoru, Niikura Kaoru, or 薫 (薫/カオル) （ニイクラカオル), born February 17, 1974 in Hyougo. Kaoru is the oldest member and leader of Dir en grey. He composes most of the music.
  • The other guitarist is Die or Andou Daisuke (DIE/ヂエ) （アンドウダイスケ）, born December 20, 1974 in Mie.
  • The Bassist is Toshiya or Hara Toshimasa (Toshiya/トシヤ) （ハラトシマサ）, born March 31, 1977 in Nagano.
  • The drummer is Shinya or Terachi Shinya (Shinya/シンヤ) （テラチシンヤ）, born February 24, 1978 in Osaka. Shinya has a quiet and shy stage personality. In Dir en grey's visual days, he often dressed like a woman. He has said that the most important thing in his life is his dog, Miyu.

Brief history

Dir en grey released their first mini album, MISSA, on July 25, 1997. They gained major attention after their second single -I'll- (August 12, 1998) broke indies sales record by reaching #7 on the Japanese Oricon charts. The band's success caught the eye of X-Japan's Yoshiki who went on to produce their first major album, GAUZE (July 28, 1999). Three of the singles from GAUZE hit the top 10 in the Oricon charts.

In the next few years, the band went on to release MACABRE (October 20, 2000), 鬼葬 (kisou) (January 30, 2002) and 改 (-kai-) (August 22, 2001). -kai- was an album with remixed versions of songs, some by the band themselves. Although the change in the band's psyche across the tracks is apparent, these albums retained a strong visual theme.

They started their own record company in 2000, FIREWALL DIV., to produce MACABRE and the rest of their works from that time on.

In 2002, they toured outside Japan for the first time, playing in many Asian cities. In Shanghai, fans became so excited that the authorities tried to cancel the second concert. However, Kaoru refused and the band played the show.

Dir en grey's following album, VULGAR (September 10, 2003), featured an aggressive, metal influenced sound. It remains one of the band's most controversial releases.

Although they no longer consider themselves a ‘visual’ band, Dir en grey still surprises and shocks people with each new release. They have released hard tracks like "OBSCURE" and "PINK KILLER", rock ballads such as "蟲 -mushi- " or " MACABRE ― 揚羽ノ羽ノ夢ハ蛹 ― (MACABRE -sanagi no yume wa ageha no hane-)", pop songs like "yokan (予感)," and tracks such as "Mr. NEWSMAN" with profound lyrics but with a heart wrenching vocal bridge, or "umbrella" with its catchy chorus. With the large variety of albums and singles produced from this band, it is very difficult to accurately categorize them.

The band's single 朔-saku- (July 14, 2004) contains 4 songs; new recordings "Machiavellism" & "朔-saku-", long-time techno show-opener "G.D.S.", and a hidden live track of "蝕紅 (shokubeni)" from their May performance at Club Citta' Kawasaki. Their latest album is Withering to death. and the support tour is called It withers and withers. Separately of Withering to death's promotion, Dir en grey visited Germany and France to perform at Rock im Park and Rock am Ring on May 28th, June 3rd, and June 4th 2005.

On September 21, 2005, Dir en grey released a new single, CLEVER SLEAZOID, which also contains three live songs from the album "Withering to death," which was released in 2005.

It is worth noting that Dir en grey also played a live by themselves in Berlin in May 2005, selling out 3,500 tickets to Columbia Hall in 3 days.

After 'Clever Sleazoid' was released, it made it's way to #15 on the Official Finnish Single Chart. Withering to Death made its way to #31 on the Official Finnish Album Chart, TOP40. Note that this was the second time Dir en grey appears on a non-Asian chart, the first time being the WTD-album at #31.

Fandom and other information

Dir en grey have had a fairly rare phenomenon amongst its fans. Due to the eclectic nature their music, each album release is often simultaneous with a change in artistic direction, especially in their image. Many fans of Dir en grey have been divided over what is the definitive 'era' in which Dir en grey was at its creative high.

The most clear break occurred in the "VULGAR" time period. The direction taken by the band had a clear emphasis on heavier rock but also American influences. Many argued their artistic direction had matured while others felt they had strayed too far away from their Visual Kei [Japanese] roots. The album is both hated and loved, and one of the favorite arguing points of many fans.

Visual Kei is a style of artistic expression that reveled in flamboyance and androgyny, dominating the earlier styles of Dir en grey's career. It has since changed steadily, and Dir en grey's image is now more influenced by punk and heavy metal.
